Estelle Is In The Building!!!!

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

I know it's 3am in the morning but the kid ain't tired at all!!!! I was supposed to be spinning at a club in New Jersey tonight but thanks to the snow the joint was canceled. That's why we New Yorkers are the number one party people in the world (unlike New Jersey) because nothing stops us from partying; not hail, sleet, or snow.
(Like the U.S. Mail, LOL)

Well let's get to the story, at the beginning this year I came across this record that I had never heard before. The joint caught my ear because Kanye West was dropping some HOT bars at the beginning of the song (as usual), then I quickly thought to myself

"Did Kanye drop some new shit that the kid missed out on?".

My question was quickly answered when I heard the song transition into one of the smoothest voices that I have ever heard on a song, the new joint I was listening to was "American Boy" by an artist from the U.K. named Estelle. The music reminded me of Jamiroquai mixed Loose Ends mixed Chaka Kahn (For My Old School Classic Heads). Well me being me I started to do my research on her and found out that she had been on the music scene for awhile in London and she had recently been signed to John Legend's new label Homeschool Records being distributed by Atlantic Records. She was also being co-signed by some pretty big names in the music industry like Kanye West, DJ Mark Ronson, Will.I.Am, Swizz Beats, and Gnarls Barkley's Cee-Lo. After my research I reached out to Manny "The Secret Weapon" Toro to see if he had heard about her (He's always on top of upcoming talent), and he too was aware of her as a hot up in coming artist on the scene. I was so impressed with her music that I started spreading the word about her to other friends and sending the mp3 out to everybody I knew. Feel good music like this is what the music industry needs right now, and with all the bullshit that is on the radio airwaves right now people need to be aware of the fact that REAL talent does exist in music world.
(No Studio Engineering With Estelle)

Well two weeks ago me and my Serato took a trip to the City Of Lost Angel's a.k.a. Los Angeles (My Second Home), for my fellow Turntable Assassin E-One's Birthday Party @ Republic in Hollywood. I always have to be careful with E-One because every time I go to the West Coast this guy takes me on some crazy long expeditions, mostly in part because he happens to work for Atlantic Records / Special Ops Divison.

(They just promote records; not to be confused with Navy Seals or Delta Force Unit, LOL)

Well just as I expected on my first full day in L.A. this dude wants to take me to work with him. Thing is that this particular weekend the Grammy's are taking place in L.A. and he has to take an artist to do the radio room for the Grammy's at the Staples Arena. For everybody not familiar with the radio room, basically they cram about what seems to be about 100 national and international radio stations in a big room, and Grammy nominees from every music genre get the opportunity to be interviewed live. So here we go again E-One tells me we will be done by 2 pm the latest so I'm cool with it. As we make a quick stop by the Warner Brothers Music offices (Shouts to Warren Gesin a.k.a The dude with the sharpest threads in the building, LOL) I proceed to ask him who is the artist that he has to take to the radio room,

and he says "This hot new artist from the U.K. named Estelle" (WOW, LOL).

I couldn't believe it, I was going to meet the woman with the smooth voice. Well I indeed got the opportunity to meet Estelle and we got a chance to discuss her music and what she had planned for the future. I have to say that two of the things that impressed me about Estelle was that she really knows her music and is very humble. She was the only new artist that was doing the radio room and she held her own with the likes of Janet Jackson, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Akon, Nelly Furtado, and many others. That speaks volumes about the type of person she is as well as the type of grounded artist she also is, and something tells me that she will be walking the Grammy radio room as a nominee in years to come. If you are not up on Estelle and her new single "American Boy" featuring Kanye West, you better get on it now. Estelle is one of the music industry's best kept secrets and she is well on her way to the top of the music charts.

If I had to describe her style and voice, "She is the PAST, the PRESENT, and the FUTURE!"

Happy Birthday E-One, party was off the hook and Suge Knight didn't kill anybody, LOL
I had a blast in L.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.

I saw Kim Kardashian doing the radio room at the Grammy's, this chick's ass is the truth!!!!

P.S 2

People were sweating the Burton Leather Croc Backpack, LOL!!!!
