New Article: XXL Magazine Pays Tribute To Notorious B.I.G. With March 2012 Cover

March 9, 2012, marks the 15-year anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death and XXL is paying tribute to the late, great Brooklyn MC with a special issue dedicated to his legacy.

Similar to the honorary issue dedicated to Tupac Shakur and the 15th anniversary of his passing, released by XXL in September of 2011, the XXL team spoke to some of those closest to Big for an in-depth look into his life and death. From his kids T’Yanna and Christopher “CJ” Wallace and their mamas, Jan Jackson and Faith Evans, to his closest friends like members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and others, many got their chance to share stories and more to pay homage to the beloved MC. Most even disclosed rare, never-before-published photos of Biggie from their personal collections, which are featured in this month’s issue. Since Big was one of the most swagger-jacked rappers of all time, there’s a list of the 100 best Biggie bites, a look a what The Notorious One might have looked like at 40-plus, and much more.

Even though the issue is a Big tribute there’s much more in the mag to look forward to. It’s been 15 years since 1997, arguably the best year in hip-hop music, and XXL explores that very notion with a detailed essay. There’s also a look back at 2011’s rap music with a recap of the five best albums, mixtapes, verses, producers and singles of the year.

However, as only he can do, White made his mark at Winter X Games Aspen Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe, winning gold and effectively solidifying a five-time repeat with a score of 94.00 on his very first run of the night. White could have mailed in his final run and taken a victory lap, but instead threw down the single greatest slew of tricks in Winter X Games history. Starting off the run with a towering 18-ft backside air, White stuck a frontside double cork 1080, a Cab double cork 1080, a frontside stalefish 540, a double McTwist 1260, and his signature frontside double cork 1260 before all was said and done, garnering the first perfect score of 100 in the history of Winter X.

“It's unreal. I've been wanting that 100 forever. Thank you so much, everybody tonight,” White, a two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medalist, said (via ESPN). “I came here on a mission: I couldn't compete in slope [the slope style event, because of a sprained ankle] and it kind of broke me. I didn't know what to do. I was sitting around icing my ankle wondering if I could even ride tonight, and I kind of took out a little bit of that anxiety and anger that I couldn't compete in slope in the pipe tonight.”

Sneakers like the Air Jordan XI don't just happen. There's a long process to it, one that starts a of 18 months before the shoe appears on shelves, one filled with false starts and fanciful ideas. What emerges from a designer's mind is slowly refined and re-worked until a plausible product is born. On the occasion of the re-retro of one of the most iconic Air Jordans of all-time - the Concord XI - the good people at Jordan gave us an exclusive look at some of Tinker Hatfield's early work on the Air Jordan XI. Recently, Tinker Hatfield shared some of his original Air Jordan XI sketches with Complex. Check the date: August 14, 1994. Not only was Mike retired, but the release of the Air Jordan X was still a couple months away. Still, the basic form of what would become the Air Jordan XI had already taken shape, and with two words - "shiny leather" - everything was about to change.

Same day, different colorway. While the laceless design didn't make it to market (other attempts for a laceless Jordan have been made since then, and have also failed), the carbon spring plate did. It's become a key structure in high-end basketball sneakers ever since.

Progress. Laces. The colorway is recognizable, as is the lacing system - although it wouldn't make it to the finished product. Instead, it became a key component of a shoe worn by one of MJ's teammates.

December 8, 1994. Things start to get more recognizable. And while the sketch itself is rough, it's very cool to see how a designer - even one as accomplished as Tinker Hatfield - questions himself at every turn. This is the process.

More work from December. Every little detail worked out thoroughly. Those lace loops? They didn't "just happen" Note the high cut and the one-piece "tongue", things that changed before the official release.

Inspiration and design. Note the lawnmower in the middle. The lowly garden implement inspired the use of patent leather as a protective element. Designers are always looking for ideas, and sometimes they come from the most unlikely places.

More preliminary work. While the colorway weren't set, the palette was coming together nicely. Many at Nike remained skeptical of wether Mike would even return to basketball, but Tinker kept faith and kept working. But we suspect not even he knew how it would pay off.

New Whip: 2013 HPE800 Twin Turbo Jeep by Hennessey Performance

Hennessey Performance (HPE) is well known for taking fast cars, trucks and SUV's and making them faster. The company will be offering their HPE800 Twin Turbo Jeep for 2013. Based on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, the crew from HPE takes the factory 6.4 L Hemi and increases displacement to 7.0 L (426 cubic inches) while adding a twin turbo forced induction system. The resulting 805 bhp and 823 lb-ft of torque will be enough to propel the HPE800 from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds.

Additional modifications include an upgraded transmission system and torque converter upgrade, 15.1 inch Brembo brakes front and rear, a lowered sport suspension system, lighter alloy wheels, carbon fiber front splitter and a custom leather interior with Alcantara steering wheel.

"We've built dozens of 600-800 hp Jeep SRT8s over the past five years, so we have an existing client base who will want to upgrade the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to an even higher level", said company founder and president, John Hennessey. "This vehicle is designed for the performance minded driver who lives in Aspen or Moscow and wants to be the fastest in all weather conditions."

HPE will limit production at just 24 examples with pricing starting at $235,000. (SOURCE)

Over the weekend, "Saturday Night Live" poked fun at the headlines, invoking an appearance from Jesus himself - as played by Jason Sudeikis.

The skit begins in the locker room after the Broncos' win, with Tebow thanking "the most important person in my life, my Lord and savior Jesus Christ," and lo and behold - a bearded Sudeikis appears.

"First of all, you're welcome. Yes, I Jesus Christ, am indeed the reason you've won your past six football games," he says. "Here's the thing: If we're going to keep doing this, you guys gotta meet me halfway out there. If you need another reason to be happy that the NBA lockout is finally over well here you go; Don't miss out on the chance to discover whether Shaquille O'Neal's sharp sense of humor translates to television.

O'Neal, the 15-time All-Star center who spent the final season of his career with the Celtics, has joined Turner Sports to serve as an analyst across its various NBA platforms. Most notably, he will become a full-time analyst on TNT's popular studio show "Inside The NBA," joining host Ernie Johnson and analysts Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley.

“Shaq knows the game and, on and off the floor, he has always been entertaining; a guy who gets it," Johnson said in a press release. "Obviously, I know I’m going to have to eat before I get to the studio.”

Chris Webber and Kevin McHale appeared on the program as guest analysts last season. McHale has moved on to coach the Houston Rockets. Webber will continue as an analyst on NBA TV, also a Turner Sports property.

O'Neal's role on TNT extends beyond his studio duties -- and even the realm of sports. He will contribute to NBA TV and NBA.com, providing analysis and commentary throughout the regular season, postseason, All-Star festivities, and the draft. His deal also includes a development agreement with Turner's entertainment and animation networks.

But the coup for TNT is bringing him aboard "Inside The NBA." The chemistry on the program between Johnson, Smith, and Barkley has made the five-time Emmy-winning program arguably the best sports studio show on television. O'Neal outsized personality may change the dynamic somewhat, but the interaction between the charismatic O'Neal and the outrageous and hilarious Barkley should make for compelling television, presuming they get along better than they did here:

Earlier this month Supra and Corona presented their new collaborative effort entitled the Supra “Corona Cuttler". It features a mainly white canvas SupraTUF upper with minimal blue and gold hints throughout the base. An emblazoned Corona bottle appears on the inside of the tongue and a full-length Corona Extra bottle is spotted under the transparent sole. When the going gets tough, Alec Baldwin goes to “Saturday Night Live.”

The “30 Rock” funnyman, who was kicked off an American Airlines flight last Tuesday for refusing to turn off his cell phone while playing the game Words With Friends, had a few words to share with his SNL friends – and fans.

Dressed as pilot Captain Steve Rogers, Baldwin joined Seth Myers for SNL’s Weekend Update to extend a heartfelt apology for the incident to, well, himself.

“It was awful Seth,” mustachioed Captain Rogers said. “Which is why it was important for me to come here and on behalf of everyone at American Airlines, issue an apology to Mr. Alec Baldwin!”

“Mr. Baldwin is an American treasure!”

Like any keen interviewer, Myers kept the questions about the star’s tantrum coming.

“It was also reported that Alec Baldwin slammed the bathroom door so loudly it could be heard in the cockpit?”

“Now Seth, Words with Friends can be frustrating,” Captain Rogers explained. “But when you think you’re about to play 'jailers' off of somebody's 'quiche' and you realize you don’t have the ‘i’ - let me tell you - that would make you slam the door too!”

“Don’t phones interfere with the plane’s communication system?” Myers asked.

“Oh, you don’t believe that, do you, Seth? Would you really get on an airplane that flies 30,000 feet in the air if you thought a Kindle switch would bring it down? Come on it’s just a cruel joke perpetrated by the airline industry.”

While Baldwin had America in stitches, American Airlines may not take so kindly to the surprise skit, considering personnel have already asked the airline to remove “30 Rock” as in-flight entertainment, requested that Baldwin be put on an internal no-fly list and suggested he also be fined by the FAA.

"It has not been proven that electronic devices do not interfere with safety sensitive systems of the aircraft, especially at critical times of flight, taxi, take-off and landing," American Airlines flight attendant Lonny Glover, a safety and security expert with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, told the Daily News.

"We do not want to risk the safety, fellow passengers and crew by playing a word game on an iPad, sending that last text, reading that last paragraph of your E-book," he said.

The Three Stooges is written & directed by filmmaking brothers Bobby & Peter Farrelly, of the comedies including Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin, There's Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, The Heartbreak Kid and Hall Pass. Inspired by the original "Three Stooges" shorts from the 1930s, the storyline will follow the trio from when they're orphans and into adulthood. The film will be divided into three half-hour shorts, and the Stooges will get mixed up in plots involving murder and a reality show. Diesel Thanaz Slim-Skinny Jeans
What's good about these is sometimes when you go into jean specialized brand shops, they can be a little overwhelming. Diesel does a god job of marketing their jeans so the retail experience is well-curated. There are five styles. There will be three to fit your body type. This is their slim straight. They do super skinny and skin-tight, but we like a slim jean. Diesel is Italian, they have the best distressing plants, there's a bit of a Euro flair to it (not literally at the bottom), but it gives it a patina. They're the kings of premium denim—they were, after all, among the first to offer a $200 pair of jeans. Now it feels like that's the norm.

Neil Barrett Slub Jersey Double Neck T-Shirt
This is the tee we put on Jay-Z in the picture of him smiling. It's a double-neck and Neil Barrett has always put a couple of trompe l'oeil pieces in his collection. One season he did a T-shirt with suspenders. A couple seasons ago, he did grey T-shirts with another neck sewn into them. It's a head-turner, but it's also subtle. It's one example of how, Neil being a modernist, has taken the classic tee and given it a little oomph. Here's to people not thinking that you can take a T-shirt and make it anything but basic. We started saying this last summer and early fall, the idea that most guys understand a loafer and the sockless thing, but they don't think to put them away for fall. This loafer has a high vamp and elegance. You put this with purple socks and a grey suit, you're good to go. The penny loafers of yesteryear had shorter vamps and a much more rounded toe and the beefier roll on the side. They were a much more casual thing and thought to be worn with khakis and jeans. This is as dressy a loafer can get. There are a lot of people out there doing these loafers and it's really for the guy who prefers a loafer. Sometimes I love a loafer because it gets you out quickly, you're instantly dressed. This will hold up to the most elegant suit. Price: $475

Oliver Peoples Daddy B Sunglasses
These are the sunglasses on Jay-Z and I love these Oliver Peoples because there's incredible quality. It has a retro look, but we're past the point of Wayfarer culture. This has a bit more refinement and that slight keyhole opening, which means the nosepiece will look good on everybody. I love the smoky black lenses. It's very stealth-like, but there's something classic about it. It reminds me of something I'd see in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Sometimes it's the subtle ones that look the coolest. And we love a much more rounded sunglass going forward for fall and spring. I think a lot of times when people wear those strong sunglasses, they're great, but the sunglasses are wearing you. New Gear: Carrera Day Date Calibre 16

Since its release back in 2008, the Carrera Day-Date Calibre 16 has become one of the most popular watches in the TAG Heuer range: bigger, bolder and more intricately designed than most of the Carrera models, the Day-Date model is the Alpha Male of the Carrera pack.

TAG Heuer offer the combination Day-Date feature on several Calibre 16 watches, (The Aquaracer and- in the past- the Link) but typically the only change between the “Date” and “Day-Date” model is the larger date window and additional functionality implied by the name. As someone who rarely uses the date function and never uses the day function (sure, I forget the date occasionally, but rarely which day of the week it is), it’s not the functionality of this watch that makes it interesting to me- it’s the design.

The design of the Day-Date Carrera is distinctly different to the Calibre 16 Date Carrera (below)- sure the case design is the same, but whether it be the chronograph pushers, the crown, the dial or the hands, almost every aspect of the design has been changed.

Instead of thinking of the Day-Date as being a Carrera Chronograph with a Day function, the best way to think of the watch is that it’s an affordable Carrera 360.

As you can see from the photo above, the Carrera Day-Date borrows its looks from the 2006 Carrera Calibre 360, the limited edition Carrera range launched to showcase the Calibre 360 1/ 100th second movement.

Both watches use the over-size 43mm case- 2mm larger than the standard Carrera and a massive 20% larger than the 36mm Carrera re-edition from 1996. As well as having a larger case, both watches place the minute and seconds hash-marks on an angled inner-bezel, freeing up more room on the dial for the signature applied minute markers, set out in 5-minute increments. Look carefully and you’ll see that both watches also use the same small triangles on the inner bezel to mark each 5-minute increment.

The other design flourish borrowed from the Carrera 360 is the double-crown, a look that the Carrera 360 passed on to other watches in the TAG Heuer range, including the Grand Carrera and Monaco V4.

Overall the design of the watch works very well- the additional detailed touches and applied markers give the watch a more 3D, premium look. The question for people looking to buy a Carrera will be whether they like this design, or prefer the more understated Date-only Chronograph.

The Day-Date Carrera is available in three dial colours- white, black and brown. Each of these models comes with either a steel bracelet, or a leather crocodile strap (black leather for the white and black dial and brown leather for the brown dial).

The Brown and Black dial watches have an external tachy bezel that matches the dial colour, while the white dial watch gets a stainless steel bezel.

This watch was the basis for the 2009 Singapore Grand Prix Carrera, which replaces the Red highlights with Green and replaces the plain titanium bezel with a black bezel.

The NBA season will happen after all, thanks to a handshake deal struck in New York between David Stern’s NBA and what remains of Billy Hunter’s players association.

As the dust settles after one of the NBA’s more cantankerous episodes, here’s an early peek at who wins and who loses in the upcoming new collective bargaining agreement.

WINNER: David Stern

A missed season would have mucked up his legacy profoundly and called into question his ability to control his owners. A deal, on the other hand, shows he still has the touch.

WINNER: Billy Hunter

He was under serious fire from agents. They have been concerned about his salary, how he runs the union and too many concessions to the owners. And yet, for the third time in as many attempts, he has delivered what matters most: a deal. The first two times, pundits said they were bad deals for players, but over the following years, the pundits were proved wrong -- the players have done very well under Hunter, who many say has negotiated his last CBA. And if the players are sharing in the league’s overseas and national TV revenues, this deal also could look great by the time it’s done.

WINNER: Adam Silver

Stern pointedly put his deputy in the spotlight through one of the choppier moments in NBA history, with the tall order to “reset” the way the league works in a fashion that favors owners. The ride was plenty bumpy, but mission more or less accomplished.

WINNER: Derek Fisher’s next career

For much of the lockout, Fisher became the public face of the union, and the private one; he said he thought he had talked to every single NBA player during the lockout, except for a few whose email addresses had changed. He proved he can speak extemporaneously, in stressful environments, without putting his foot in his mouth. That bodes well for whatever he wants to do next.

WINNERS: Player development experts

With luxury tax more punitive than ever, there will be a premium on those who can help a team round out a roster with incredibly cheap but productive players. The Spurs have had a habit of finding and developing those guys -- now every team will have to do so.

WINNERS: Stat geeks

Everyone is playing “Moneyball” now. If it can help you control player costs, it can help you win titles.

WINNERS: Incoming owners

In Detroit and Philadelphia, they set the purchase price in an environment of league-wide losses and labor uncertainty. Now they emerge with owner-friendly rules, high TV ratings, media-friendly young stars to drive future league-wide ratings, a better national TV deal on the horizon, promising overseas markets and the knowledge that it’ll be harder in the future for opponents to outspend them.

LOSER: Mark Cuban

The good news is he gets to have a season of glory and a chance to defend that title. The bad news is he is said to have wanted a system that would protect him from big losses even as he went all-out to field the most competitive possible team. A stiff luxury tax, however, does not get him there. Now, to protect his bottom line, he’ll have to develop a new skill: spending discipline.

WINNER: Jerry Buss

Revenue sharing is a bitter pill to swallow, but he still owns one of the most lucrative franchises in sports, he’ll always be able to attract amazing free agents and now fans will understand if he spends a little less on payroll.

LOSERS: Lakers fans

One nice thing about rooting for the Lakers has long been knowing that the team would spend whatever it would take to be competitive. Now that’ll be harder.

LOSERS: The big agents

They tested their influence among players against Hunter and Fisher. And ultimately, this deal was struck between Hunter and Stern. Worth noting: The Players Association regulates agents.

WINNERS: Players who signed long guaranteed deals in the past year

This is a big group, ranging from Paul Pierce to LeBron James. It’ll be tough to beat their old-CBA deals under the new CBA.

WINNERS: The Knicks

This is a deep-pocketed team looking to build a winner. The Knicks still need more players, and with a hard cap out of the picture, they continue to have some flexibility to keep spending if they have to.

LOSERS: The middle class

As owners and the league have spent a year obsessing about player costs, one clear factor has emerged: The poor-value contracts are the big deals for middling players. With or without stiff taxes, you can expect more teams to catch on to the idea of paying for stars and filling in the rest of the roster cheaply.

WINNER: The D-League

As more teams seek bargain players, more teams will invest effort in getting the most out of the NBA's little brother.

LOSERS: Superstars

They have long made far less than they are worth, and that’s not going to change now.

WINNERS: Strategic dealmakers

A wild and woolly free-agent miniseason likely will commence Dec. 9 under new operating rules. Front offices that know the players they want and what they’re worth in this brave new world could work wonders. Look for the usual candidates -- San Antonio, Houston, Oklahoma City -- to be working the angles.

WINNER: Deron Williams

He gets to come home from Turkey without a major injury and having had likely the most lucrative offseason of any player. Mitigating factor: Now he’s seeking a big new deal in a more restrictive system.

WINNER: The New Orleans Hornets

These CBA talks long included talks of contracting the Hornets out of existence. Now that the talks are over, it has to feel good that that discussion never amounted to much. The next trick: Prove that under a new, more owner-friendly deal the team can be viable in the Big Easy.

WINNERS: Fans of the Spurs, Heat, Magic and Mavericks

It was a terrible thing to have your “win now” team sit now.

WINNER: Kobe Bryant

He’s now the NBA’s highest-paid player and a guy who made the right moves in the lockout, toying with various overseas backup plans while looking good back home by offering to lend money to NBA colleagues in need.

WINNERS: Timberwolves

Owner Glen Taylor gets to reduce the financial pain. President of basketball operations David Kahn keeps his job. New coach Rick Adelman breathes life into the proceedings. And the long list of talented young players grows further with Derrick Williams and Ricky Rubio.

WINNERS: The Denver Nuggets

Remember when the Heat had all that cap room to sign free agents? The Nuggets are basically like that, only now all kinds of teams will be on a course to shed payroll. There’s not a system in the world in which you can’t parlay tiny roster commitments into potential.

WINNER: Player movement

You know you love the excitement of a trade. And there’s going to be more of that. The old CBA went to some trouble to keep teams united. The new one, not so much. The league noticed that LeBron James’ desertion of Cleveland spurred more interest in the NBA, not, as feared, less. It’s no accident the new system will inspire a lot of player movement.

Revenue sharing will be a factor here, too. While a lot of the CBA fight was about the rich teams adding free agents, the deal's biggest effect might be at the other end of the spending spectrum. The stingiest teams ought to be ready to join the bidding to add salaries here and there. That's a win for small markets and for free agents.

LOSERS: The Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers carry high salaries with a mediocre team, and we know for certain the GM has not spent the summer executing a new master plan. We know this because there is no GM. But common sense would suggest this team has to win a lot or change a lot, and one of its favorite tools of the past -- outspending rivals -- has grown trickier.

New Video: DJ Premier feat. Nas & The Berklee Symphony Orchestra - Regeneration

DJ Premier was given Classical and began his immersion into the genre with Bruce Adolphe, a former classical music professor at Juilliard. They met at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music not far from DJ Premier’s home in NY. After learning about classical music theory, the inspirations of some of the genre’s most profound composers and how traditional pieces are structured, DJ Premier went out and bought tons of classical symphonies on vinyl to mash up his own creation. We then took that mash-up and orchestrated it for sheet music. In the first step of the actual recording process, DJ Premier partnered with Stephen Webber, a professor and conductor at the Berklee College of Music. Stephen taught Premier how to conduct and helped him in studio with the 58-piece Berklee Symphony Orchestra you hear on the track. Of all the takes, the one you hear is the “wild” version (which means they recorded it without the metronome in their headphones) DJ Premier conducted himself. Then DJ Premier brought that instrumental track back home to NY and Nas laid down his rhyme on top of it. #CLASSICHIPHOP

Drake isn’t happy. Not in an existential way or anything. He’s not upset about the direction his life is heading, or about the subliminal potshots rappers keep sending his way. Nah, he’s unhappy with how his photo shoot for this magazine is going down. Which is surprising because it’s a bright, unseasonably warm October afternoon in downtown Toronto, and things were going so well.

We’re perched on the roof of the posh Thompson Hotel where Drizzy’s being photographed overlooking his city like a feudal lord surveying his kingdom. To his left are cranes modernizing the largest city in Canada. To his right is the Rogers Centre, the convertible stadium seen in his “Headlines” video.

Suddenly Drake tells the photographer to stop and calls for his manager, Oliver El Khatib, 25, co-captain of the creative team October’s Very Own. Canceling a cover shoot at this stage would be a serious waste of time and money, but Drake doesn’t give a fuck. He wants things done his way or not at all.

Drake doesn’t want to keep shooting with this photographer. He’d rather get Hyghly Alleyne & Lamar Taylor—the same young Toronto dudes who shot the “Headlines” video—to finish the job. Never mind the fact that the first photographer is also a young cat from Toronto who’d been approved by Drake’s management and publicists.

“I’m not going to take that shit,” Drake says when I ask him later what went wrong at the shoot. “Nah man, I work too fucking hard for that. So does everyone around me.” Drake doesn’t often yell, even when he’s riled up. When he wants to emphasize a point, he focuses his stare and slows his speech so it’s clear. “Not to hate,” he says, “and to whoever I snatched that opportunity from, I apologize. But this is about what we’re trying to build here.”

What Aubrey Graham, 25, and his OVO crew are trying to build here is— excuse the cliché—a Toronto movement.

I just feel like I'm really good right now. I've never felt like that before.

“For Drake we have these budgets where we can do videos and shoot photographs by whoever the fuck we want, the hottest guys in New York or L.A.,” Oliver explains. “But I’d rather take Hyghly and Lamar, two kids who are 20 years old... I’d rather build up their portfolios and help them get on and do this video. So now they’ve done ‘Marvin's Room’ and ‘Headlines,’ and hopefully they can do more videos. They shot all Drake’s album artwork.

“We have this little fun factory in Toronto where there’s music being made, there’s art being done, videos being made, we’re starting to work more on our clothing,” Oliver says. “It’s kind of fun, you know? We’re giving opportunities to kids who deserve it... It’s different because everything we’ve done has worked.”

“There used to be a conversation in the Toronto hip-hop scene,” says producer Noah “40” Shebib. “You would [ask] on a regular basis: Who do you think is goin’ to do it? Do you think it’s even possible? Do you think a Canadian rapper could ever blow up in America? That conversation doesn’t get had anymore.”

Since breaking into the mainstream with So Far Gone, the 2009 mixtape that became his hip-hop baptism, Drake has positioned himself as one of music’s premier players. This coup was facilitated by his alliance with Lil Wayne, who damn near kidnapped the young Canadian, taking him on a nationwide tour before throwing him on numerous tracks. When Weezy reported to Rikers Island in March 2010 for an eight-month bid, Drake and his fellow Young Money/ Cash Money signee Nicki Minaj stepped up as the label’s primary breadwinners. His moody, emotionally honest debut, Thank Me Later, hit No. 1 on Billboard, selling 447,000 in the first week, and birthing three Top 20 hits.

Drake’s introspective, self-effacing lyrics—usually delivered in clever, succinct couplets—reveal the inner machinations of many dudes in their mid-twenties: the quest to live life to the limit, not just survive a nine-to-five; the balance of carnal desires with sincere compassion for women’s feelings; the struggle to act responsible when all you want to do is blow your paycheck on lap dances, liquor, and weed.

With gangster rap in decline, and Kanye refashioning the parameters of rap stardom, Drake arrived right on time. But his success has made him one of the most polarizing figures in music. Lil Wayne anointed him the best rapper alive, and he’s rhymed alongside some of the greatest—Bun B, Jay-Z, Jeezy—yet some insist that Drake isn’t hip-hop; that he’s too soft; that he sings too damn much; that he doesn’t sing enough—and should stop rapping; that he wears silly outfits.

“They nitpick at everything,” he says, shaking his head. “I can’t do anything. All they want me to do is dress so they can make fun of me. Otherwise, it’s hard for them. I don’t give people many reasons to dislike me. They have to find shit. They’re like, ‘Aw man, sweaters! He wears sweaters too much.’ Like, what?”

No other good rapper—because, let’s be honest, Drake’s one of the best doing it— draws the same amount of love and ire. It’s enough to drive a person crazy. For every three who applaud him—Nas has likened Drake to “fresh water on dry land”—there’s one looking to shoot him down.

"If someone wants to bring a problem to me, it's strictly based on their immense amount of hate for me."

Most recently it was Pusha T, the newest G.O.O.D. Music recruit, throwing thinly veiled jabs (“The swag don’t match the sweaters”) in a freestyle over Drake’s Jai Paul–sampling “Dreams Money Can Buy.”

Which is not to say that Drake doesn’t play the same game. When he dropped “Dreams” last May, he ruffled feathers with the line “I feel like it went from top five to remaining five/My favorite rappers either lost it or they ain’t alive.” Since he once said he’d cry if Jay-Z died, it’s safe to assume Hov would make his top five. But when pressed, Drake neither confirms nor denies whether Jay and Kanye were targets.

“It wasn’t meant to be a shot at the five rappers that I love,” he says. “I’ve never even sat down and pieced together a top five before. I just feel like I’m really good right now. And I’ve never felt like that before. I’ve always felt reluctant to say anything like that, but I’m very confident in these new raps that I’m about to give the world.”

Drake’s also very confident in the strength of his YMCMB team. When he says, “They trying to bring us down/Me, Weezy, and Stunna,” he may be referring to “H.A.M.,” the first single from Watch The Throne, on which Jay-Z took unnamed rappers to task for having “baby money,” and not even as much as his lady. Lil Wayne wasn’t the only listener who took that as a reference to Cash Money CEO Bryan “Baby” Williams. Five months later on DJ Khaled’s summer banger “I’m on One,” Drake proclaimed that “the throne is for the taking” before advising listeners to “watch” him take it.

Careful listeners may have noticed that Kanye West (who’s worked with Drake in the past) employed the “hashtag flow”— which Drake popularized—on “Otis,” the biggest single from The Throne’s recent album. Many wondered who he was referring to when he said: “Niggas talking real reckless / #Stuntmen / I adopted these niggas, Philip Drummond them.”

The cold war heated up when Wayne returned fire on “It’s Good” from Tha Carter IV. In the song, which also featured Jadakiss and Drake, Weezy presumably talks about kidnapping Beyoncé. Jada declared neutrality immediately after the song leaked, stressing that he had no idea what Lil Wayne was going to say. His denials sounded reasonable enough, but what about Drake? “I’m his soldier,” he says, affirming his loyalty to President Carter.

Still, Drake does his best to remain diplomatic—sort of. “Rapping is about being young and doing your thing and being fly,” he says—the implication being that if older rappers catch feelings, so be it. “I’m sure people took it that way and that’s good, man. That’s great. Wake the fuck up. I hope it makes you go harder. I hope it makes you get mad at me and write a song with me in mind. I hope Kanye’s verse on ‘Otis’ was with that in mind. Everyone tried to tell me ‘Oh Jay is going at you.’ I don’t hear it, but I hope it was man, that song is fucking incredible. Making each other go harder, that's what this shit is about.”

The very fact that rappers with more mileage in this game see Drake as worthy of dissing is noteworthy. If the adage “never shoot down” holds any weight, Drake should interpret all this verbal turmoil as high praise. No one’s taking the time to go at Wiz Khalifa’s neck, or to chop Big Sean down to size.

With the death of rap icon Heavy D, hip hop lost a trailblazer who defied what folks expected of the genre and its superstars. Being hip hop’s first corpulent solo rap superstar, Heavy (born Dwight Myer) had talent that equally matched the novelty of his size, enough to help launch Andre Harrell’s Uptown Records in 1986 with the release of Heavy D & The Boyz’s debut hit single “Mr. Big Stuff.”

But also driving Heavy’s success was his ability to maintain a fun, clean-cut respectability that garnered respect from both hardcore hip hop fans and grandmothers alike. It was that universality in his music and image that allowed him to cross his talents over to film and television. After writing (and performing) the theme song for the ground-breaking sketch comedy series In Living Color, Heavy—like many rappers in the early '90s—parlayed his hip hop stardom into acting roles on the small and big screen. His first major role came when he was cast as a regular on the hit TV series Roc.

Yet, most notably, for those paying attention in 1993, Heavy would also play a pivotal role in the continuum of overweight rap superstars changing the face of hip hop when his LP Blue Funk debuted an up-and-coming Notorious B.I.G. (the song “A Buncha N***as”).

Steve Jobs, the visionary in the black turtleneck who co-founded Apple in a Silicon Valley garage, built it into the world's leading tech company and led a mobile-computing revolution with wildly popular devices such as the iPhone, died Wednesday. He was 56. The hard-driving executive pioneered the concept of the personal computer and of navigating them by clicking onscreen images with a mouse. In more recent years, he introduced the iPod portable music player, the iPhone and the iPad tablet -- all of which changed how we consume content in the digital age.

His friends and Apple fans on Wednesday night mourned the passing of a tech titan. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives," Apple said in a statement. "The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

More than one pundit, praising Jobs' ability to transform entire industries with his inventions, called him a modern-day Leonardo Da Vinci. "Steve Jobs is one of the great innovators in the history of modern capitalism," New York Times columnist Joe Nocera said in August. "His intuition has been phenomenal over the years. "Jobs' death, while dreaded by Apple's legions of fans, was not unexpected. He had battled cancer for years, took a medical leave from Apple in January and stepped down as chief executive in August because he could "no longer meet (his) duties and expectations."

Born February 24, 1955, and then adopted, Jobs grew up in Cupertino, California -- which would become home to Apple's headquarters -- and showed an early interest in electronics. As a teenager, he phoned William Hewlett, president of Hewlett-Packard, to request parts for a school project. He got them, along with an offer of a summer job at HP.

Jobs dropped out of Oregon's Reed College after one semester, although he returned to audit a class in calligraphy, which he says influenced Apple's graceful, minimalist aesthetic. He quit one of his first jobs, designing video games for Atari, to backpack across India and take psychedelic drugs. Those experiences, Jobs said later, shaped his creative vision. "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future," he told Stanford University graduates during a commencement speech in 2005. "You have to trust in something: your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

While at HP, Jobs befriended Steve Wozniak, who impressed him with his skill at assembling electronic components. The two later joined a Silicon Valley computer hobbyists club, and when he was 21, Jobs teamed with Wozniak and two other men to launch Apple Computer Inc. It's long been Silicon Valley legend: Jobs and Wozniak built their first commercial product, the Apple 1, in Jobs' parents' garage in 1976. Jobs sold his Volkswagen van to help finance the venture. The primitive computer, priced at $666.66, had no keyboard or display, and customers had to assemble it themselves. The following year, Apple unveiled the Apple II computer at the inaugural West Coast Computer Faire. The machine was a hit, and the personal computing revolution was under way. Jobs was among the first computer engineers to recognize the appeal of the mouse and the graphical interface, which let users operate computers by clicking on images instead of writing text.

Apple's pioneering Macintosh computer launched in early 1984 with a now-iconic, Orwellian-themed Super Bowl ad. The boxy beige Macintosh sold well, but the demanding Jobs clashed frequently with colleagues, and in 1986, he was ousted from Apple after a power struggle. Then came a 10-year hiatus during which he founded NeXT Computer, whose pricey, cube-shaped computer workstations never caught on with consumers.

Jobs had more success when he bought Pixar Animation Studios from George Lucas before the company made it big with "Toy Story." Jobs brought the same marketing skill to Pixar that he became known for at Apple. His brief but emotional pitch for "Finding Nemo," for example, was a masterful bit of succinct storytelling.

In 1996, Apple bought NeXT, returning Jobs to the then-struggling company he had co-founded. Within a year, he was running Apple again -- older and perhaps wiser but no less of a perfectionist. And in 2001, he took the stage to introduce the original iPod, the little white device that transformed portable music and kick-started Apple's furious comeback. Thus began one of the most remarkable second acts in the history of business. Over the next decade, Jobs wowed launch-event audiences, and consumers, with one game-changing hit after another: iTunes (2003), the iPhone (2007), the App Store (2008), and the iPad (2010).

Observers marveled at Jobs' skills as a pitchman, his ability to inspire godlike devotion among Apple "fanboys" (and scorn from PC fans) and his "one more thing" surprise announcements. Time after time, he sold people on a product they didn't know they needed until he invented it. And all this on an official annual salary of $1. He also built a reputation as a hard-driving, mercurial and sometimes difficult boss who oversaw almost every detail of Apple's products and rejected prototypes that didn't meet his exacting standards.

By the late 2000s, his once-renegade tech company, the David to Microsoft's Goliath, was entrenched at the uppermost tier of American business. Apple now operates more than 300 retail stores in 11 countries. The company has sold more than 275 million iPods, 100 million iPhones and 25 million iPads worldwide. Jobs' climb to the top was complete in summer 2011, when Apple listed more cash reserves than the U.S. Treasury and even briefly surpassed Exxon Mobil as the world's most valuable company.

But Jobs' health problems sometimes cast a shadow over his company's success. In 2004, he announced to his employees that he was being treated for pancreatic cancer. He lost weight and appeared unusually gaunt at keynote speeches to Apple developers, spurring concerns about his health and fluctuations in the company's stock price. One wire service accidentally published Jobs' obituary. Jobs had a secret liver transplant in 2009 in Tennessee during a six-month medical leave of absence from Apple. He took another medical leave in January this year. Perhaps mindful of his legacy, he cooperated on his first authorized biography, scheduled to be published by Simon & Schuster in November.

Jobs is survived by his wife of 20 years, Laurene, and four children, including one from a prior relationship.
He always spoke with immense pride about what he and his engineers accomplished at Apple.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do," he told the Stanford grads in 2005.
"If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on."

Mariano Rivera was warming up for his attempt at the all-time saves record Monday when a bizarre cheer caught his ear. When Rivera realized what had caused the applause - Nick Swisher hitting into a double play that ended the eighth inning and ensured he would get a save opportunity - he thought two things:

"These fans are crazy," he recalled, smiling. And, he added, "Oh, my God, these fans are into it."

Truth be told, so was Rivera. He has never loved the spotlight and, he admitted, was tiring of the attention to his personal pursuit of both Trevor Hoffman and history. He wasn't exactly rooting for a teammate to fail, but, he said, "I'll be honest, I was happy, too. I wanted to pitch.

Only Rivera could make Yankee fans cheer when one of their own hits into a double play, and from that moment on, the day turned into a party at the Stadium. Fans got on their feet and stayed there until Rivera completed a perfect ninth inning, slamming the door on a 6-4 victory over the Twins in a makeup game from an April rainout. In a season already soaked with history - Derek Jeter got his 3,000th hit on July 9 - Rivera earned his 602nd career save, one more than Hoffman for the most in history.

The Stadium was not packed. Although the announced attendance was 40,045, there were large swaths of empty seats, something Rivera noted. But, as he put it, "There were a lot of wonderful people here who supported me my whole career."

And the fans were ready to celebrate. They trilled with delight when the first strains of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" cranked up. When it was over, they went wild when Jorge Posada and other Yankees urged Rivera to stand atop the mound to soak in the moment.

As much as he prefers anonymity, Rivera seemed to revel in the accomplishment. As it ended, the Yankees poured out of the dugout and the bullpens and Rivera embraced each one, getting misty when teammates directed him to the mound. He told the fans he loved them during an on-field interview and grinned and tipped his cap at the Twins and their manager, Ron Gardenhire, who stuck around to watch the celebration.

"For the first time in my career, I'm on the mound alone, there is no one behind me," Rivera said. "I can't describe that feeling. It was priceless. I didn't know it could be like that." He did try to describe it, though: "It was a feeling like that when we won the World Series. I'll give you that, that emotion."

Rivera grinned broadly and joked often, clearly having a good time, during a 15-minute press conference in which he sat next to his three sons. They all wore commemorative T-shirts.

He gave a shout-out to his home country of Panama, acknowledging that it "has to be a party" in Puerto Caimito, the small fishing village where he grew up. He paused during an answer to congratulate a reporter on the recent birth of a daughter. He joked that, unlike other closers, he didn't have big muscles or a beard.

"I don't have any hair," he added. Getting 600 saves means, in part, "you're old," the 41-year-old said.

Joe Girardi and several Yankees said they didn't think anyone would ever surpass this mark, but Rivera wasn't so sure.

"Records are meant to be broken, but I don't know," he said. "I hope whoever is going to do that respects the game the way I have." A religious man, he also thanked God multiple times.

Early on, though, it seemed as if Rivera's milestone would have to wait another day. The Yankees scored five times in the first three innings, squandered chances for more and watched while A.J. Burnett was, to hear him tell it, "nasty."

But as much as Rivera closing a game is a familiar script, so are things going haywire when Burnett pitches. He was out of the game midway through the fifth inning, meaning he was ineligible for the win, and Minnesota pulled to within 5-4. Cory Wade (6-1) had let one inherited runner score, but got out of danger, and Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano and David Robertson recorded seven straight outs to get the ball to the guy they always want to have it in the ninth.

And when Rivera gets the ball, "it's a peaceful feeling," Girardi said. And after that peace, after Rivera had saved another victory that trimmed the Yankees' magic number for winning the AL East to five , there was plenty of joy.

"It feels great," Rivera said. "I wasn't expecting this, but thank God it happened."
