New Kicks: Nike SB x Air Jordan 1

Thursday, February 27, 2014

Both rebels of the 1980s, Michael Jordan’s shoes and skateboarding culture collide to create the Nike SB x Air Jordan 1. MJ’s first signature made waves when it was banned from the NBA, giving the model an oppositional image that lines up with the vibes of skating. The two entities officially came together when famous skaters started donning the silhouette on the ramps in the late ’80s, appreciating its supportive ankle height and Nike Air cushioning. This mashup that has been a longtime coming is inaugurated in a green and black colorway that was designed by multimedia artist Craig Stecyk, who brought his signature tribal visual identity to the model with “AJ One SB” tonally scribed on the heel and insoles. Three renditions of the Nike SB x Air Jordan 1 will ultimately be released, with this first style code from Craig Stecyk kicking it off on March 15th.  (SOURCE)

New Gear: Louis Vuitton Rolls Out Custom Luggage To Match The BMW i8 Plug-In Hybrid

Luggage that doesn’t match your $136,000 plug-in hybrid? Unthinkable!

Design house Louis Vuitton has unveiled a set of luggage that is designed to go with BMW’s new plug-in sports car, the i8.

This collaboration with BMW epitomizes our shared values of creativity, technological innovation and style,” said Patrick-Louis Vuitton, Head of Special Orders at Louis Vuitton, in a statement. “Our craftsmen at Louis Vuitton have enjoyed the challenge of this very special project, using their ingenuity and attention to detail to create a truly made to measure set of luxury luggage. This is a pure expression of the art of travel.

A briefcase, garment bag, and two overnight bags from the French design house are patterned to match the i8’s interior, complete with Louis Vuitton's trademark checkered Damier pattern. Made entirely from lightweight, sturdy carbon fiber, these bags not only look sophisticated, but are made to take a beating—when they aren’t riding shotgun in a six-figure sports car, of course.

BMW and Louis Vuitton share both a profound appreciation of tradition and a commitment to constant further development,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The use of CFRP in the revolutionary BMW i8 sports car is indicative of an intelligent lightweight construction philosophy. And Louis Vuitton has demonstrated a similar belief in innovation, aesthetics and lightweight design in creating an exclusive luggage collection tailored perfectly to the new BMW i8.”

The i8 luggage series will be available for order at select Louis Vuitton stores—including the New York location—in April. The BMW i8 is expected to be available at dealerships in the U.S. this spring. (SOURCE)

New Tech: Bringrr Makes Sure You Never Drive Away Without You Smartphone

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Detailed on the official Bringrr site, this tech gadget plugs into a car’s cigarette lighter and links up to mobile devices like your smartphone or tablet. When you start the car, power flows to the Bringrr and the gadget searches for your mobile devices over Bluetooth. If you happen to have forgotten your smartphone, a LED light will flash on the outside of the Bringrr and an audible tone will alert the user to a missing device. The creators of Bringrr have also included a standard USB port on the front of the gadget to allow users to charge their mobile devices during a drive.

In addition to Bluetooth pairing with mobile devices, the Bringrr is also compatible with a small tag called the BringTag. The BringTag is small enough to be used on a keyring as well as a bookbag, laptop bag or purse, again useful when leaving the house. Utilizing an interchangeable battery that will last approximately one year, the BringTag can also communicate with mobile devices through an application. Combined with the GPS function within most smartphones, the mobile app tracks the last location of all BringTags. In other words, you would only have to check the app to see where you accidentally left something important.

The app ties into the core scheduling application on both iOS and Android smartphones. Conceptually, it allows the user to set a specific grouping of objects that should be in the car before leaving. For instance, someone heading out on vacation on a specific day may want to tag all of their luggage to make sure everything is in the car before leaving home.

Interestingly, the developers of Bringrr have also made the device compatible with Google Glass. Rather than simply relying on the Bringrr’s audio and visual alert, Google Glass will display specific names of objects that are missing from the car. In addition, users can assign specific BringTags to an object by simply taking a picture of the item with Glass. You can also ask Glass where an item is located and the display will use arrows to indicate the location of the missing object.

The creators are also attempting to develop a Bringrr community that acts as a security system of sorts. If a specific object with a BringTag is stolen, the owner should mark that item as missing. If the object passes within range of another user of the Bringrr mobile application, the owner of the object will be alerted of the location. However, personal information or location data of the person that “spotted” the stolen item will not be revealed to the original user. It’s possible that this alert system could work for pets as well, but it’s only as good as the number of people that installed the application. Competing products like Tagg are probably more useful for pets.

Since the team that’s building Bringrr already completed a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, the target window for the launch of the device is currently July 2014. After the initial batch of devices ship to early backers, the retail price of the Bringrr will be around $30 while the BringTag will be in the $20 range. Users will be able to track up to 10 different BringTags at any given time. (SOURCE)

New Trailer: Lenny Cooke (Documentary Film)

Friday, February 14, 2014

This weekend many people will be watching their favorite basketball players in action at the 2014 NBA All Star Weekend taking place in New Orleans, LA. This weekend’s festivities gives players the opportunity showcase their talent on a worldwide level, and the platform to let people know what hard work and dedication can provide you. What basketball fans don’t always get is the chance to see what happens to young basketball players in this U.S. who dream about the NBA, but for one reason or another do not make it to this level. What’s the flipside????

In 2001, Lenny Cooke was the most hyped high school basketball player in the country, ranked above future greats LeBron James, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. In an era when high school stars were forgoing college hoops in favor of the potential multi-million dollar contracts promised in the NBA draft, Lenny was supposed to be the next superstar. He had the world at his fingertips. But over a decade later, while his peers are taking home MVP awards and championship trophies, Lenny has never played a minute in the NBA. What went wrong?

With incredible access to Lenny’s story as it unfolded over the past decade, filmmaking brothers Joshua and Benny Safdie follow Lenny from his run-down home in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to the New Jersey suburbs where he spent his high school career through to the present day, with the friends and family who shared in his dreams and aspirations. Lenny Cooke is a quintessentially American story about dreaming big, the fickle nature of sports celebrity and the unfulfilled destiny of a man for whom superstardom was only just out of reach. (SOURCE)
