New Tech: LG Optimus G Phone

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Mobile World Congress may be the launchpad for the global version of the LG Optimus G Pro, but it feels like we already know it intimately. Though there were a lot of new LG devices on display, we couldn’t help but spend most of our time with the G Pro.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the Optimus G Pro is big, and every bit of its 5.5-inch screen is felt when you pick it up. It feels solid in the hand, and amazingly shaves about 20 grams off the weight of competing devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and even the Nokia Lumia 920’s overall weight. The back has the same spangly finish as the Nexus 4, and looked great against the white chassis. There was no flex to worry about, although the buttons on the side are made of plastic and have an unpleasant, cheap click to them, not unlike most Samsung products.

LG may have skimped a little with the buttons and building materials, but it certainly hasn’t done so with the screen, as its 1080p resolution looks fabulous. The demo videos were beautifully crisp and the 400ppi pixel density produces such detail and sharpness, it makes us want a similarly high-res display on every other mobile device we own.

LG’s new features are a mixed bag

Android 4.1.2 is installed along with LG’s own user interface, although there isn’t much to separate it and Samsung’s TouchWiz, with the pair sharing similar icons, transitions, and animations. They’re not twins, but would certainly be considered close relatives. Like Samsung, LG uses custom apps baked into the OS to differentiate itself from others, some of which look useful and others bizarre.

On the helpful side we’ve got QMemo, which turns the screen into a notepad and you use your finger to trace out notes. The handwriting recognition is good, but it needs some concentration to “write” neatly, as jotting anything at speed results in massive, scrawled letters on the screen. QMemo can be accessed through the notification center, but it’s at its best when assigned to the QButton on the side of the device. This shortcut key means QMemo is a single, simple click away when on a call, a time when you’d you’re likely to need it most.

So, QMemo (and the QButton) are additions we could see ourselves using. (The Q button can be used as a shutter button, as well.) Dual Recording on the other hand, isn’t. It records a video using both front and rear cameras at the same time, with the forward-facing cam’s picture (containing your face) appearing in a little picture-in-picture box. Even LG struggled to give a good reason for its existence, saying it would be helpful in business meetings, but not elaborating any further. During playback, the extra window is distracting and detracts from what’s presumably the focus of the video – recorded using the rear camera – making Dual Recording feel like a feature produced purely because it could be done, rather than fulfilling a need.

The list of LG’s custom apps continues in a similar vein. A collaboration tool for sharing screens and content, the option to display three apps at the same time, and the now obligatory universal remote (named, you’ve guessed it, QRemote) are among the best ideas shown.

Huge phone, gorgeous screen

Like all tablet/smartphone hybrid hardware, the overriding impression of the Optimus G Pro is it’s size. LG has made a few concessions in the OS to compensate, such as the ability to shift the keyboard and dialer over by a centimeter or so to make one-handed use a more viable prospect; but the fact remains any mobile device with a screen this big won’t be for everyone. The daintily-handed could find it awkward (although this is hardly unique to the Optimus G Pro), and should try before buying. For all those already convinced this is the form-factor for them, the few missteps here aren’t enough to eclipse the gorgeous screen and LG’s mostly value-adding apps. (SOURCE)

McLaren has further announced that this model’s hybrid powertrain combines a mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 and an electric motor producing a system output of 903HP (916PS) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sending power to the rear wheels.

New Tech: Vertu Launches Android-Based Vertu Ti Smartphone

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

At a swish launch event in London, Vertu, the luxury mobile phone manufacturer formerly part of Nokia, has unveiled its first smartphone running Google Android. After years of Symbian and Series 40, the Vertu TI finally provides it’s wealthy owners with a modern operating system to match the stunning hardware.

While discussing the specification of the Vertu TI really misses the point, and isn’t at all what the phone is about, the TI represents a Vertu first as it actually has a feature list worth talking about. The screen measures 3.7-inches and has a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, while powering the phone is a dual-core, 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. The 8-megapixel camera can shoot 1080p video, plus there is a 1.3-megapixel video call lens above the screen, NFC, and 64GB of internal storage memory.

The Google Android operating system is 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which although isn’t the latest version, is upgradeable in the future. Vertu has created its own user interface, which is very subtle and not at all intrusive. The familiar app launcher remains, as does the pull-down notification panel and the multiple home screens. It’s noticeably cleaner-looking though, and incorporates Vertu’s trademark Concierge service perfectly.

Concierge on call

It is accessed using a dedicated button on the side of the device, which brings up and attractive three-button menu. This is very much a part of Vertu’s appeal, and one of the reasons behind the high price. The Concierge is on hand 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, and will assist you with anything from making restaurant reservations to finding someone to deliver a crisp, white dress shirt at short notice. Communicating with the concierge can be done over the phone, by text message or by instant message.

This feature is joined by Life where your interests, combined with your previous interactions with the concierge, come together in a list of recommendations for what to do and see based on your location. Because it’s created by a real person, not an algorithm, it’s very personal. Finally there’s Certainty, which connects you to your own security company which can be used for background checks or even for hiring a bodyguard. While you and I may not have a need for such things, Vertu’s research says there are plenty of people who do.

Luxury doesn’t come cheap

The phone itself is typically Vertu, but far more modern and appealing than any phone the company has previously produced; almost as if the removal of Symbian and S40 has exorcised the ghost of those impressive but unattractive designs with which the brand is associated. It’s handmade from forged aluminum, polished titanium, and sapphire crystal, and feels incredible in the hand. The alligator leather is there if you want it, but it’s an option rather than the phone’s signature style.

There are four versions of the Vertu TI: The Titanium Black Leather, the Titanium Pure Black, the Titanium Black Alligator and the Black PVD Titanium Red Gold Mixed Metals. They cost 7,900 euros, 9,500 euros, 10,500 euros and 16,500 euros respectively. Convert that over into dollars and you’ve got $10,700, $12,950, $14,300 and $22,500. Yep, the Vertu TI costs more than the smartphones we normally talk about, but then Ferrari cars and Breitling watches are more expensive than a BMW 3-Series and a Swatch, and that’s the difference between a Galaxy S3 and a Vertu TI. (SOURCE)

New Auto: 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C

Its chassis is made entirely from carbon fiber for lightness and rigidity, while the car is less than 13 feet long with a wheelbase of 7.8 feet.
