New Video: Sacha Baron Cohen Dumps Ashes On Ryan Seacrest

Monday, February 27, 2012

He may not have taken best fashion honors, but Sacha Baron Cohen usurped the attention on the red carpet before Sunday's Academy Awards — by dumping “Kim Jong Il’s ashes” all over E! host Ryan Seacrest.

The 40-year-old actor showed up in full costume and full character as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen the titular despot from his upcoming movie, “The Dictator.”

"Ryan, hello! Death to the West," Cohen greeted Seacrest.

When Seacrest provided the straight line as to why Cohen was carrying an urn with the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il’s likeness on the side, the actor explained in a thick Middle Eastern accent:

“It gave me the opportunity to bring my dear friend and double tennis partner Kim Jong Il. It was his dream to come to the Oscars and be sprinkled over the red carpet and Halle Cerry's chest again."” Cohen said, before seeming to trip and dump the urn’s contents all over Seacrest’s tuxedo.

“If someone asks what you are wearing, say Kim Jong Il,” he said as he was escorted away by security.

Earlier in the week, Cohen had reportedly been banned from appearing at Sunday’s ceremony, by Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences officials who feared the publicity stunt would overshadow the Oscars.

Right about now, Seacrest probably wishes he was.

There was an apparent change of heart later in the week.

“We’re thrilled to have him and he’ll be on the red carpet dressed as ‘The Dictator,’ Oscars producer Brian Grazer told “Extra” on Friday.

New Article: Google Glasses Due Out This Year?

People who constantly reach into a pocket to check a smartphone for bits of information will soon have another option: a pair of Google-made glasses that will be able to stream information to the wearer’s eyeballs in real time.

According to several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named, the glasses will go on sale to the public by the end of the year. These people said they are expected “to cost around the price of current smartphones,” or $250 to $600.

The people familiar with the Google glasses said they would be Android-based, and will include a small screen that will sit a few inches from someone’s eye. They will also have a 3G or 4G data connection and a number of sensors including motion and GPS.

A Google spokesman declined to comment on the project.

Seth Weintraub, a blogger for 9 to 5 Google, who first wrote about the glasses project in December, and then discovered more information about them this month, also said the glasses would be Android-based and cited a source that described their look as that of a pair of Oakley Thumps.

They will also have a unique navigation system. “The navigation system currently used is a head tilting to scroll and click,” Mr. Weintraub wrote this month. “We are told it is very quick to learn and once the user is adept at navigation, it becomes second nature and almost indistinguishable to outside users.”

The glasses will have a low-resolution built-in camera that will be able to monitor the world in real time and overlay information about locations, surrounding buildings and friends who might be nearby, according to the Google employees. The glasses are not designed to be worn constantly — although Google expects some of the nerdiest users will wear them a lot — but will be more like smartphones, used when needed.

Internally, the Google X team has been actively discussing the privacy implications of the glasses and the company wants to ensure that people know if they are being recorded by someone wearing a pair of glasses with a built-in camera.

The project is currently being built in the Google X offices, a secretive laboratory near Google’s main campus that is charged with working on robots, space elevators and dozens of other futuristic projects.

One of the key people involved with the glasses is Steve Lee, a Google engineer and creator of the Google mapping software, Latitude. As a result of Mr. Lee’s involvement, location information will be paramount in the first version released to the public, several people who have seen the glasses said. The other key leader on the glasses project is Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder, who is currently spending most of his time in the Google X labs.

One Google employee said the glasses would tap into a number of Google software products that are currently available and in use today, but will display the information in an augmented reality view, rather than as a Web browser page like those that people see on smartphones.

The glasses will send data to the cloud and then use things like Google Latitude to share location, Google Goggles to search images and figure out what is being looked at, and Google Maps to show other things nearby, the Google employee said. “You will be able to check in to locations with your friends through the glasses,” they added.

Everyone I spoke with who was familiar with the project repeatedly said that Google was not thinking about potential business models with the new glasses. Instead, they said, Google sees the project as an experiment that anyone will be able to join. If consumers take to the glasses when they are released later this year, then Google will explore possible revenue streams.

As I noted in a Disruptions column last year, Apple engineers are also exploring wearable computing, but the company is taking a different route, focusing on computers that strap around someone’s wrist.

Last week The San Jose Mercury News discovered plans by Google to build a $120 million electronics testing facility that will be involved in testing “precision optical technology.”

New Trailer: Marley

With posters of his image gracing college dorms and countless t-shirts, people have seen plenty of the late reggae musician Bob Marley. Now fans will get a chance to dive deeper into the man's life in the form of Kevin Macdonald's aptly titled documentary Marley. Clocking in at around two-and-a-half hours, the film is a comprehensive look into the life of Bob Marley before his untimely death in 1981. The only complaint I've heard about this documentary is that it seems to gloss over certain points of Marley's life and acts more as a timeline of his life rather than a look at the issues and moments that made the man. Watch!

Marley was originally supposed to be directed by Silence of the Lambs filmmaker Jonathan Demme before Life in a Day and Last King of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald came on board. It chronicles the life of Bob Marley and his career as a reggae musician before passing away in 1981. The film has played at TIFF with a screening at SXSW next month. The film is set for release on April 20th 2012.

New Tech: Apple OS X Mountain Lion Preview

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Apple today released a developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of the world’s most advanced operating system, which brings popular apps and features from iPad to the Mac and accelerates the pace of OS X innovation. Mountain Lion introduces Messages, Notes, Reminders and Game Center to the Mac, as well as Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring. Mountain Lion is the first OS X release built with iCloud in mind for easy setup and integration with apps. The developer preview of Mountain Lion also introduces Gatekeeper, a revolutionary security feature that helps keep you safe from malicious software by giving you complete control over what apps are installed on your Mac. The preview release of Mountain Lion is available to Mac Developer Program members starting today. Mac users will be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store in late summer 2012. Further information is available here. (SOURCE)

Messages App – Replaces iChat and allows you to send unlimited messages, high-quality photos and videos directly from your Mac to another Mac or iOS device. Messages will continue to support AIM, Jabber, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk. Starting today Lion users can download a beta of Messages from Apple.com, and the final version will be available with Mountain Lion. Reminders and Notes help you create and track your to-dos across all your devices. Game Center lets you personalize your Mac gaming experience, find new games and challenge friends to play live multiplayer games, whether they’re on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Notification Center – Provides easy access to alerts from Mail, Calendar, Messages, Reminders, system updates and third party apps. System-wide Share Sheets make it easy to share links, photos and videos directly from Apple and third party apps. Twitter is integrated throughout Mountain Lion so you can sign on once and tweet directly from Safari, Quick Look, Photo Booth, Preview and third party apps. Mountain Lion also introduces AirPlay Mirroring, an easy way to wirelessly send a secure 720p video stream of what’s on your Mac to an HDTV using Apple TV.

iCloud – Access documents across your devices. Mountain Lion uses your Apple ID to automatically set up Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Messages, FaceTime® and Find My Mac. The new iCloud Documents pushes any changes to all your devices so documents are always up to date, and a new API helps developers make document-based apps work with iCloud.

Gatekeeper – A revolutionary new security feature that gives you control over which apps can be downloaded and installed on your Mac. You can choose to install apps from any source, just as you do on a Mac today, or you can use the safer default setting to install apps from the Mac App Store, along with apps from developers that have a unique Developer ID from Apple. For maximum security, you can set Gatekeeper to only allow apps from the Mac App Store to be downloaded and installed.

Rest In Peace Whitney Houston

Monday, February 13, 2012

Among the annals of national anthems as a prelude to sporting events, few have topped the one delivered by Whitney Houston, who died Saturday, before Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa. Just a woman, her incredible voice and the bare minimum of extraneous notes.

Her rendition came at a particularly patriotic time, just after the onset of the Persian Gulf War, and was released as a single. It was re-released after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Houston donated all proceeds to charity. There was some controversy over whether she had pre-recorded the song, but it still ranks among the best all-time because of the circumstances and ... that voice..

One of the best renditions of our national anthem!

Rest In Peace Whitney Houston......

New Article: Madden NFL 12 Has Giants Beating Patriots In Super Bowl XLVI

Sunday, February 5, 2012

Eli Manning, true to form in 2011, will lead the Giants on a scoring drive in the final two minutes of Super Bowl XLVI and Big Blue will defeat New England, 27-24, and raise the Lombardi Trophy in Indianapolis on Sunday.

Don't choke on your buffalo wing! We're not here to make a bold prediction, that's just the way the game turned out in the annual Madden NFL 12 simulation.

The video game gurus have it all coming down to a Lawrence Tynes field goal with three seconds remaining to clinch it, which fulfills a dream he revealed in Monday's Daily News. Funny how that works out, right?

It's pure speculation, of course, but the Madden simulation has correctly picked the winner in six of the last eight Super Bowls. The two it missed on were last year's game (they had the Steelers winning) and Super Bowl XLII, and we all know how that turned out. (SOURCE)

New Tech: Nike + Fuelband

Thursday, February 2, 2012

NIKE announced the NIKE+ FuelBand, an innovative wristband that tracks and measures everyday movement to motivate and inspire people to be more active. Activities can now be measured through a new metric called NikeFuel: the more active you are, the more NikeFuel you earn.

NIKE President & CEO Mark Parker unveiled NIKE+ FuelBand at an event in New York attended by seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Oklahoma City scoring champion and all-star Kevin Durant and 2011 IAAF women’s 100-meter World Champion Carmelita Jeter.

“The NIKE+ FuelBand is a way for Nike to further evolve the exciting possibilities of merging the physical and digital worlds,” said Parker. “Nike has always been about inspiring athletes, and the NIKE+ FuelBand will help motivate them in a simple, fun and intuitive way.”

Designed to be worn throughout the day, the ergonomic, user-friendly NIKE+ FuelBand uses accelerometry to provide information about different activities through movement of the wrist via a LED dot matrix display. Four metrics are available: Time, Calories, Steps and NikeFuel. Unlike calorie counts, which vary based on someone’s gender and body type, NikeFuel is a normalized score that awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup.

Users set a daily goal of how active they want to be, and how much NikeFuel they want to achieve. The NIKE+ FuelBand displays a series of 20 LED lights that go from red-to-green as the user gets closer to their goal. The FuelBand syncs with the Nike+ website through a built-in USB, or wirelessly through Bluetooth to a free iPhone app, to record activity and track progress every day. The app interface also provides encouragement and motivation as goals are achieved.

Armstrong said, “What’s great about the idea of NikeFuel and the FuelBand is the way it provides real information and numbers to show how much people are doing all day, every day. That’s what will get people challenging themselves to do more and better their own scores. It’s a tool to get people more active.”

“NikeFuel means everyone can get recognition for activities they do,” said Durant. “It provides a scoreboard for your day and gets everyone moving.” Jeter said, “You don’t have to be an elite athlete to appreciate how NikeFuel can motivate you. It’s an easy way to get credit for activities and compare how you do with others, even if you take part in different sports.

The Nike+ Fuelband will be available for preorder starting January 19th in the US at Nikestore.com for a suggested retail price of $149 (US).
