New Article: XXL Magazine Pays Tribute To Notorious B.I.G. With March 2012 Cover

Monday, January 30, 2012

March 9, 2012, marks the 15-year anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death and XXL is paying tribute to the late, great Brooklyn MC with a special issue dedicated to his legacy.

Similar to the honorary issue dedicated to Tupac Shakur and the 15th anniversary of his passing, released by XXL in September of 2011, the XXL team spoke to some of those closest to Big for an in-depth look into his life and death. From his kids T’Yanna and Christopher “CJ” Wallace and their mamas, Jan Jackson and Faith Evans, to his closest friends like members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and others, many got their chance to share stories and more to pay homage to the beloved MC. Most even disclosed rare, never-before-published photos of Biggie from their personal collections, which are featured in this month’s issue. Since Big was one of the most swagger-jacked rappers of all time, there’s a list of the 100 best Biggie bites, a look a what The Notorious One might have looked like at 40-plus, and much more.

Even though the issue is a Big tribute there’s much more in the mag to look forward to. It’s been 15 years since 1997, arguably the best year in hip-hop music, and XXL explores that very notion with a detailed essay. There’s also a look back at 2011’s rap music with a recap of the five best albums, mixtapes, verses, producers and singles of the year.

Check out XXLMag.com for an entire month’s-worth of Biggie-related stories that celebrate his life and death, extras from the issue, including outtakes, as well as everyday hip-hop news and much more. And cop the special tribute issue when it hits stands on February 7.—XXL Staff (SOURCE)

New Video: Winter X Games 2012 - Shaun White Wins 5th Straight SuperPipe Gold Medal with Perfect Score

Nursing a bum ankle, Shaun White had already pulled out of Slopestyle earlier this week, leaving many to wonder how he would fare in his signature event. However, as only he can do, White made his mark at Winter X Games Aspen Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe, winning gold and effectively solidifying a five-time repeat with a score of 94.00 on his very first run of the night. White could have mailed in his final run and taken a victory lap, but instead threw down the single greatest slew of tricks in Winter X Games history. Starting off the run with a towering 18-ft backside air, White stuck a frontside double cork 1080, a Cab double cork 1080, a frontside stalefish 540, a double McTwist 1260, and his signature frontside double cork 1260 before all was said and done, garnering the first perfect score of 100 in the history of Winter X.

It's unreal. I've been wanting that 100 forever. Thank you so much, everybody tonight,” White, a two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medalist, said (via ESPN). “I came here on a mission: I couldn't compete in slope [the slope style event, because of a sprained ankle] and it kind of broke me. I didn't know what to do. I was sitting around icing my ankle wondering if I could even ride tonight, and I kind of took out a little bit of that anxiety and anger that I couldn't compete in slope in the pipe tonight.”

New Kicks: A History of Nike's Chinese New Year Air Force 1's

Nike "Year Of The Horse" Air Force 1's

This Lunar New Year was so popular it got not one but two releases in 2002. Featuring a galloping horse on the insole and the character for “horse” on the tongue and heel tab, this red and white release remains one of the more coveted Chinese New Year AF1s to date. It’s no wonder the horse in the Chinese Zodiac is associated with popularity and intelligence, because these are a no-brainer.

Nike "Year Of The Goat" Air Force 1's

Released in 2003, this Zodiac AF1 is characterized by an all-white leather upper with limited orange accents on the tongue and insole. The “Goat” AF1 also features a light icy outsole, which ultimately gives this release a bit of flair while still staying true to the calm dependability associated with the goat.

Nike "Year Of The Monkey" Air Force 1's

In the Chinese Zodiac, the monkey is characterized as both dignified and self-assured – two words that aptly describe this 2004 Chinese New Year release from Nike. The shoe’s Swoosh provides a bit of flair as it fades from dark to light brown, and the buttery white leather upper is the perfect foundation for the sneaker’s subtle nods toward the small yet energetic jungle dweller.

Nike "Year Of The Rooster" Air Force 1's

Similar to the “Year of the Goat” release from 2003, the 2005 “Year of the Rooster” AF1 makes use of a subdued color palette, an opaque outsole and premium materials for maximum style and versatility. Inspired by an animal seen as both accurate and precise, this Chinese Zodiac release ideally embodies the personality of the rooster, even if it might not immediately garner attention.

Nike "Year Of The Dog" Air Force 1's

Loud and made up of a variety of materials and patterns, the AF1 “Year of the Dog” is definitely one of Nike’s most unforgettable odes to the Chinese Zodiac. It seems to be no coincidence that this 2005 sneaker, associated with an animal revered for its loyalty and attractiveness, has proven one of the most continually coveted in the Chinese New Year bunch, especially since it broke away from the collection’s subdued track record.

Nike "Year Of The Rabbit" Air Force 1's

With its translucent sole and chenille contrasting Swooshes, the “Year of the Rabbit” AF1 was one of the most highly sought after releases of 2011. The subtle tone of the suede upper ideally foregrounds the shoe’s crimson and varsity royal accents, while also serving as the perfect backdrop for the sneaker’s rabbit-referencing emblems.

Nike "Year Of The Dragon" Air Force 1's

Last but not least, the YOTD AF1 is the latest in the Zodiac-inspired series and a return to the more subdued beginnings of the collection. Featuring a colorful dragonhead on the tongue, an embossed pattern on the black upper and a scaled Swoosh, this pair is another winner in the line of Chinese New Year AF1 drops.
