New Article: Complex Inerviews Lyor Cohen

I don't know if many of you are familiar with Lyor Cohen, but he happens to be one of the most brilliant minds in the music industry. I have had the opportunity to hear him speak at Mixshow Power Summit in Puerto Rico, and I also met him personally of all places at Splish Splash Water Park in Long Island, New York (LOL). To look at him you wouldn't know that he is one of the pioneers of hip hop music but he is. He is right up there with Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, Steve Stoute, & Kevin Liles. If you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak don't pass it up because this man knows what he is talking about and his words will and can inspire you. I'm posting up an interview he did with Complex Magazine so you can get a taste, enjoy!

You can call Lyor Cohen by his official title: Chairman and CEO of Warner Music Group. Or you can simply call him "the check writer." Starting in the '80s as Run-DMC's road manager, the now 50-year-old American-born "tall Israeli" has become hip-hop's industry standard, having helped build Island Def Jam into a juggernaut by signing acts like Jay-Z, DMX, Slick Rick, EPMD, and Ja Rule. In 2004, he moved over to Warner and has continued molding stars, including T.I., Trey Songz, and Lupe Fiasco. Cohen recently sat with us to discuss why his son doesn't like talking rap with him, his disappointment over not signing Drake, and the reason he doesn't see much of himself in today's young music executives.

A lot of people say that the music industry is moving toward music becoming free. Is that a viable model going forward?

Lyor Cohen: If it's free, then how would record labels support paying their staff and signing new artists? I think it would be bad for culture and the art if artists and people who develop the apparatus to support those artists don't get paid. How about this: Look at the vibe around the world about America and Americans after eight years of Bush. People who adored us and aspired to our democracy and our society turned their backs on us. Content that's generated out of America, whether it be film or music, has, in my opinion, much greater impact in sustaining our credibility and our place as a cultural capital. This is our great export.

What does it say that Gucci Mane, one of your biggest artists, made his name by releasing a slew of original material for free?

Lyor Cohen: Well, I'm not convinced he didn't get paid, because a lot of those mixtapes were sold. I don't doubt that mom and pop stores sold them, but a lot of people got them for free. That has more to do with some of the corrections that need to happen in our business and the delivery of our music, whether it be radio or new Internet programming. He may have been frustrated that he wasn't able to get his music out.

You've played an integral part in hip-hop for 25 years. Nowadays, people complain about the state of rap. What do you say to people who think hip-hop's best days are behind it?

Lyor Cohen: I like moments of staleness and mildew, simply because it creates the lane for change. Remember when everything was full of color and happy-dappy when Bad Boy was running everything and then we came with DMX? Do you remember that summer? How excited people got? That's my favorite moment—when I sit on a porch in the summertime and the air gets really thick. There's no breeze. The birds start darting around. And then all of a sudden a violent storm comes through—raindrops as big as cups; lighting and thunder. I know when things get stale there's someone making an opportunity. Rap now is multi-generational, which has its own issues. My son is a big Cudi fan, but he does not like talking to me about Kid Cudi.

It's not like you don't know anything about Cudi. Why wouldn't he want to talk to you?

Lyor Cohen: Fuckin' kids don't want knowledge from their 50-year-old dad. Kids want to have their own shit. It doesn't matter if I'm in the business.

Speaking of new artists, many people were expecting Drake to sign with you at Warner Music. Did it disappoint you that he ended up going with Universal Motown?

Lyor Cohen: A very disappointing thing. But I'm a lover of rap music. I want good things to happen to this industry. I have so much good fortune and already have everything. I feel like we have a terrific company, and we're very old-school in that once we grip someone's hand, fundamentally we believe that's a deal. But that's not this generation. They'll grip someone's hand and say they're coming, but if someone offers them more they will renege. That's not how we get down.

Did Drake do that?

Lyor Cohen: I'll keep that between Drake and myself.

Have you met any young executives that you see a lot of yourself in?

Lyor Cohen: I haven't. Only because this generation is handicapped by the era of excess. I grew up in an era of love and swimming upstream, determined to prove people wrong. We had chips on our shoulders, like, "We belong here." But now it's the most popular, biggest segment of the industry. We've had a decade of private planes and Maybachs. That's not the era that I came from. The era I came from, I had zero expectation that I was going to make any money. I was determined to prove to the gatekeepers of the industry that we had a place here and we weren't going to relinquish our opportunity. I never had to keep up with nobody because we were all on subways. So it was never like, "My subway is bigger and flyer than your subway." And there was a real fraternal order. We were backstage with Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring, and we had zero fucking money. But everybody wanted us in the VIP room because we were doing something that was so important to them. People understood that it wasn't if it was going to happen, it was when it was going to happen.

New Article: Top 50 Basketball Sneakers of All Time

Friday, June 11, 2010

Coming off that great game 4 of the NBA Finals between the L.A. Lakers vs Boston Celtics I was inspired to put up this new post. So which basketball sneaker do you think is the GREATEST of all time???? Well the folks over at Complex Magazine got together with Nicekicks.com and put together a list. The list is based on performance, style, and each shoe's overall effect on sneaker culture. The list consists of 50 kicks but I'm only posting the top ten, to get a look at the rest go to the Complex Magazine Website, CLICK HERE FOR LINK Check out if your sneaker made the cut!!!!

1) Air Jordan III
Originally released in 1988, this sneaker was Tinker Hatfield's first creation within the Air Jordan series. The Air Jordan III was a groundbreaking sneaker for many reasons. It was the first Air Jordan to feature the iconic Jumpman logo, the first Air Jordan to possess a visible Air sole unit, and the first Air Jordan to own elephant print. It was backed by one of the most successful advertising campaigns with Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon character.

2) Converse Chuck Taylor
The Converse Chuck Taylor became the first mass-produced basketball shoe in North America in 1917. Since then, over 750 million pairs have been sold in 144 countries. Although the Chucks are worn as a casual, fashion sneaker today, it first started as a basketball sneaker when Chuck Taylor himself rocked them 93 years ago. No shit-talking—this is one of the biggest basketball shoes of all time.

3) Nike Air Foamposite One
The Air Foamposite One was ahead of its time—a seamless, space-age shoe with a flowing, nearly indestructible Foamposite upper, polyurethane sole, and Zoom Air cushioning. It molded to the feet of quick slashers like Penny Hardaway, but many balked at the $200 sticker price. Although the original had the "1-Cent" logo, it was never officially part of the "Air Penny" signature line. Diehard Nike heads remember watching Mike Bibby and Miles Simon rocking them when they led Arizona to a NCAA title.

4) Air Jordan XI
Many sneaker enthusiasts have labeled Michael Jordan's 11th signature sneaker the best shoe ever created. Tinker Hatfield designed this sneaker while MJ was playing baseball in hopes of him wearing it if he came back to the NBA. Design cues like the clear rubber sole, the patent leather strip, and the condura nylon upper make this shoe a flat out classic. The Air Jordan XI is easily still one of the most sought-after sneakers each time it releases.

5) Nike Air Huarche
This Tinker Hatfield design is lightweight and responsive, with a leather upper that features an interesting cut-out overlay and TPU support strap in the back of the heel. The inner part of the shoe includes a Dynamic-fit sleeve and the sole is cushioned with Flight technology to offer comfort and stability for the wearer's foot. Most remember the Fab 5 rocking these at Michigan in 1992. Still one of the greatest basketball silhouettes today, the Huarache is still evolving today.

6) Reebok Pump
Reebok created one of the best and most-recognized technologies ever in the form of the Pump. Designed by Paul Litchfield, this shoe had everybody repeating one slogan in 1989: "Pump Up, Air Out." Dominique Wilkins put this shoe on the map by winning his second Slam Dunk crown in 1990 while wearing the Reebok Pump.

7) Converse Weapon
The Converse Weapon undoubtedly put Converse Basketball on the map. It was worn by both Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, two of the most recognizable stars in the NBA during the 1980s. Both Bird and Magic wore this sneaker during the 1985 NBA Finals, in which the Lakers beat the Celtics. Weapon = Chosen.

8) Nike Hyperdunk
The Nike Hyperdunk is the predecessor to most of Nike's current basketball lineup. It launched in time for Kobe to rock it at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and this extremely lightweight sneaker was the first sneaker to feature Nike's current darling, Flywire technology. The Nike Hyperdunk was labeled the future of basketball footwear and is still worn by many players in the NBA today.

9) Reebok Question
Originally released in 1996, the Reebok Question is one of, if not the, best-selling Reebok sneakers ever created. Upon its release, the Reebok Question broke sales numbers for Reebok, allowing Reebok to sign A.I. to a long-term sneaker contract that is still active today. Allen Iverson broke ankles with his handles and broke necks with the Reebok Question, his first signature sneaker.

10) Nike Air Force 1
Many call the Nike Air Force 1 the best sneaker ever created. Designed by Bruce Kilgore in 1982, the Air Force 1 became the first sneaker to use Nike Air technology. It was worn by players in the NBA during the 1980s, including Moses Malone, Michael Cooper, Jammal Wilkes and Calvin Natt.
